– Sustainable renovation of buildings in a life-cycle perspective

There is now a need to strengthen our research group Construction Management and Building Technology with a new PhD student to build knowledge of long-term sustainable measures when renovating residential housing in existing building stocks.

The research group Construction Management and Building Technology at the Division of Industrialized and sustainable construction conducts research and education concerning the building process stretching from planning and design to construction. Our core competencies are management and automation of the building process, industrialized and traditional construction and production systems, primarily for building construction but also for civil construction. We also conduct research on virtual and energy-efficient construction through visualization, analysis and simulation. The division is a leader in Sweden in its core area and has about 30 employees. Our research is driven by industrial and societal needs and conducted in close collaboration with construction and civil engineering stakeholders; companies and other organizations.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
Construction Management and Building Technology comprises of technical solutions, tools, methods and organising for the planning, information management and control of sustainable and integrated industrialised construction and business processes.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The doctoral project is aimed at identifying, following-up and evaluating the environmental and economic effects of various renovation measures in a life cycle perspective. The first phase of the project will include state-of-the-art investigations of renovation strategies and specific measures, as well as analyses and simulations of the effects of various measures in case studies. In the second phase, methodology is developed that can be used as a basis for life-cycle-based decisions on measures in renovation projects. Residential housing in northern Sweden's building stock is used as primary case studies. The analyses will therefore take into account the special conditions and wishes with regard to technical, social, environmental and economic factors prevailing in the northern part of the country.

The doctoral project is carried out in collaboration between Luleå University of Technology, industrial actors such as property owners and designers, as well as other relevant actors for sustainable property operation and management.

WORK ASSIGNMENTS
As a PhD student, you work towards a doctoral degree after the equivalent to four years of full-time. The doctoral studies include research related work and participation in third-cycle courses relevant to the research. In addition to the doctoral studies, departmental duties of up to 20% of full-time (typically teaching and to some extent administrative work) are part of the position. The PhD student position offers great possibilities to define and plan your daily tasks and to learn to drive challenging development projects in collaboration with various parties.

While the work will primarily take place in Luleå, travel and short stays elsewhere will be required.

QUALIFICATIONS
M.Sc. degree (or equivalent basic eligibility requirements as specified in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 7, § 39) with specialization in architectural and/or civil engineering. As the research is very communicative, we require that you have a very good ability to express yourself in both oral and written English.

Qualifying is:
- Knowledge and skills within life-cycle based environmental and economic assessments
- Knowledge and skills within building or architectural technology
- Ability to work independently and ability to formulate and tackle scientific problems

Desirable is:
- Knowledge and skills within buildings systems modelling and simulation
- Knowledge and skills within design, production or operation/management of buildings
- Good knowledge of oral and written Swedish
